Data attack, Hedmark | Hedmark data attack comes from foreign emails

Scammers attempt to access employee email accounts by posing as a colleague.

The cyber attack on seven Inland municipalities comes from foreign email addresses, but who is behind it is not yet known.

– We don’t know anything about the actors behind. We will leave that to other authorities, Edvard Lysne, CEO of Hedmark ICT, tells NTB.

It was Tuesday night that Hedmark ICT, which operates IT systems in the municipalities of Hamar, Stange, Kongsvinger, Sør-Odal, Løten, Nord-Odal and Grue in Inland, discovered an attack in which emails were being sent with a malicious attachment to municipal employees. .

You can receive email

Employees of the seven Inland municipalities that were affected by a cyber attack can receive emails again on Wednesday, but not with Word attachments.

– The current state is that we are trying to normalize the situation for most of the employees. They can open emails, with certain restrictions, Lysne says.

On Wednesday, hard work is being done to map the scope of the attack and help all municipal employees wondering how to behave.

– For most people, the email system should work normally today, with the exception that we stop a series of attachments, says Lysne.

He says it is too early to say what damage the attack may have caused.

Fake emails

It is also too early to speculate on who may be behind this, he thinks.

The attack was carried out through emails that apparently came from other municipal employees. Both the address and the subject field of the emails appeared to come from colleagues.

– The only way to be absolutely sure that an email is secure is to verify the sender’s email address. It may say “Irene Haugen” as the sender, but if you click on the name, the address is “[email protected],” explains Hedmark IKT on their website.

I have not found a connection

So far, no indications of a connection have been found between the data breaches in the Storting and in various municipalities in Hedmark, according to the National Security Authority (NSM).

– But we are in an initial phase of the analysis, emphasizes the information manager Trond Øvstedal in NSM to NTB.

On Tuesday, it emerged that the Storting was hit by a comprehensive cyber attack. Several Storting politicians are said to have had their email accounts stolen and data was downloaded. On Tuesday, the Storting administration reported the case to the police.
